Abigail Chang - Piano

Abigail Chang

Abigail Chang was born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and has had a deep appreciation for the piano since she was 6 years old. Throughout her childhood and teenage years, she studied the piano under the tutelage of various teachers, primarily Ms. Wynn Yu and Dr. Christine Tan, and performed regularly in her primary school choir as both a singer and a collaborative pianist. During her high school years, she won the gold medal for the Solo Piano category in the A.C.E. School of Tomorrow's Regional Student Convention three years in a row, and received various medals for the musical ensembles in which she participated as a singer, collaborative pianist, and music arranger.

In 2020, she began her undergraduate studies at Messiah University in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, USA, and obtained a Bachelor of Music degree with a concentration in composition and the piano as her major instrument. At Messiah, she learned effective techniques for playing the piano under the guidance of Dr. Patrice Ewoldt in her first year and Chang Ya-Ting for the rest of her college career. Developing her musical abilities even further, she also studied under Dr. Joy Meade, Kirk Reese, and Gavin Horning to hone her skills in voice, jazz improvisation, and guitar playing respectively.

Additionally, she grew tremendously as a composer under the guidance of Dr. Richard Roberson, and has had most of her works performed at Messiah University throughout her college years. In October 2023, Abigail had the wonderful opportunity to compose two original pieces of music for the play "Who Will Carry the Word?" by Charlotte Delbo that was performed at Messiah University. As a collaborative pianist, she performed regularly in various student recitals and chamber ensembles. Aside from playing the piano and composing, Abigail enjoys singing and playing the guitar. She believes in using her broad musical knowledge and experience to help people of all ages to engage with music in a creative and meaningful way.
